§ 31-8. Exit signs.

  • (a)

    All exit doors in a regulated business shall be marked by an exit sign readily visible from any direction of egress travel. The exit sign shall read "EXIT" in all block letters.

    (b)

    Exit signs shall be internally or externally illuminated.

    (c)

    All exit signs are required to be continuously illuminated for a duration of not less than 120 minutes in case of primary power loss. To ensure continued illumination for a duration of not less than 120 minutes in the event of primary power loss, all exit signs shall be connected to an emergency power system provided from storage batteries, unit equipment or an on-site generator. However, a glow-in-the-dark exit sign need not be connected to an external power source provided that said sign is viewable in total darkness for a duration of not less than 120 minutes after the occurrence of primary power loss.

    (d)

    With respect to regulated businesses in operation prior to the enactment of this chapter, the exit signs shall be installed and fully operational on or before January 1, 2015. With respect to regulated businesses that come into existence after the enactment of this chapter, the exit signs shall be installed and fully operational prior to housing any residents.
